Dean
Cesar Villanueva and
Associate Dean Sedfrey Candelaria
They are most widely known as the dynamic duo
that lead the Ateneo Law School, yet they are making their mark on
another educational institution that is at the cornerstone of the
Philippine judicial system – the Philippine Judicial Academy (PhilJA).
This is the institution that provides training for judges and court
personnel and aspirants to judicial posts. Headed by Chancellor
Ameurfina A. Melencio Herrera, PhilJA is strengthened by a close
partnership with ALS. In an article called “Eagles In Our Midst,”
Herrera pay tribute to the Ateneans in their faculty: “With marked
dedication, and of invaluable assistance, all these blue-blooded
Ateneans have worked, hand in hand, with the officials and staff of the
Academy towards the pursuit of judicial excellence.” Villanueva is
Chair of the Commercial Law Department and has been active in
seminar-workshops on Intellectual Property, and Public and Private
International Law Issues. Candelaria is Chair of the Special Areas of
Concern Department and heads the Research, Publications and Linkages
Office and plays an active role in the Academy’s programs on “green
courts and agrarian justice.” Other outstanding Ateneans at PhilJA
include Supreme Court Justice Adolfo S. Azcuna, Court of Appeals Justice
Jose L. Sabio, Jr., Justice Hector L. Hofileña, Fr. Joaquin G. Bernas,
Assistant Court Administrator and former Judge Nimfa C. Vilches, Judge
Maria Filomena D. Singh, Dean Eduardo D. de los Angeles, Professor
Carlos P. Medina, Jr., Professor Amparita S. Sta. Maria, Professor Ruben
F. Balane, Atty. Melencio S. Sta. Maria, and Atty. Jose Claro S. Tesoro.
