The
Judicial and Bar Council announced recently the opening for the position
of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (Vice Hon. Ruben T. Reyes, who
will compulsorily retire on 3 January 2009). Among the applicants for
the vacancy is Dean Cesar L. Villanueva, Senior Partner of VLHT Law
Offices, Angeles City. Dean Villanueva is scheduled for public
interview by the JBC on 20 November 2008, and is being supported by at
least two incumbent Justices of the Supreme Court.

VLHT Law
leads business and government sectors in signing MOA on non-wage
benefits.
Upon the initiative of Atty. Jose T. De Leon, management
representative to the Regional Wage Board, stakeholders in Region III
signed a Memorandum of Agreement on October 15, 2008 at Hotel
Stotsenberg in Clark, which will provide non-wage benefits to employees
in Central Luzon.

Atty. Elfren P. Hipolito, Jr., was recently
elected to a new 2-year term as member of the Board of Trustees of Holy
Angel University. He is also a member of the Executive Committee and
serves as Corporate Secretary.

They are most widely known as the dynamic duo
that lead the Ateneo Law School, yet they are making their mark on
another educational institution that is at the cornerstone of the
Philippine judicial system – the Philippine Judicial Academy (PhilJA).
This is the institution that provides training for judges and court
personnel and aspirants to judicial posts. Headed by Chancellor
Ameurfina A. Melencio Herrera, PhilJA is strengthened by a close
partnership with ALS. In an article called “Eagles In Our Midst,”
Herrera pay tribute to the Ateneans in their faculty: “With marked
dedication, and of invaluable assistance, all these blue-blooded
Ateneans have worked, hand in hand, with the officials and staff of the
Academy towards the pursuit of judicial excellence.” Villanueva is
Chair of the Commercial Law Department and has been active in
seminar-workshops on Intellectual Property, and Public and Private
International Law Issues. Candelaria is Chair of the Special Areas of
Concern Department and heads the Research, Publications and Linkages
Office and plays an active role in the Academy’s programs on “green
courts and agrarian justice.” Other outstanding Ateneans at PhilJA
include Supreme Court Justice Adolfo S. Azcuna, Court of Appeals Justice
Jose L. Sabio, Jr., Justice Hector L. Hofileña, Fr. Joaquin G. Bernas,
Assistant Court Administrator and former Judge Nimfa C. Vilches, Judge
Maria Filomena D. Singh, Dean Eduardo D. de los Angeles, Professor
Carlos P. Medina, Jr., Professor Amparita S. Sta. Maria, Professor Ruben
F. Balane, Atty. Melencio S. Sta. Maria, and Atty. Jose Claro S. Tesoro.
